Description

Discover one of the first African dark teas! This tea is based on a 100% Malawian harvest and handcrafted on site as a dark shu tea, in the style of a Chinese Pu Erh.

PRESENTATION: Loose (uncompressed)

REGION: Southern Malawi, Shire Highlands (altitude: 1000 m.)

VARIETIES/CULTIVARS: Assamica

PRODUCTION: frica's first dark tea, made from the lower leaves of the tea bush, which are then processed as a BOP (broken orange pekoe) black tea. After this raw material has been produced, the leaves are fermented for 4 weeks under perfect sanitary conditions at every stage, to control the optimum development of the tea buds to ensure optimal bacterial development throughout the process.

TASTING NOTES: A deep, rich dark tea with notes typical of Chinese shu teas, evoking damp earth, humus and mushrooms. Round in texture, with a long finish.

Choosing our Malawi Dark means supporting a committed approach:

- We are very proud to be members of the Tree Planting Club: in 2024 we are financing the planting of 500 trees in partnership with our Malawian producer and his "Tree Planting Club" project. The aim: to promote the sustainable practice of agroforestry in tea cultivation, improve the incomes of local farmers by planting species that can produce crops (avocado, jackfruit, bamboo...), counter deforestation, soil erosion and the effects of climate change, pass on good environmental practices through training and long-term follow-up. Follow this link to find out more about the project.

- The producer has embarked on a conversion process to obtain "organic farming" certification: it takes several years to switch from conventional to organic farming, and is a demanding process that requires patience - time for the land, the tea plants and the people who work them to find a new balance. L'Autre Thé supports our Malawian producer in this process by buying his tea during this crucial period.

- Our producer is very much involved in the local community: his project has enabled a school and a clinic to be set up, and he is also helping farmers to acquire the skills they need to grow tea, and has joined forces with them to ensure a fair distribution of the income generated by tea sales.
